This is the official website for the SEQ WaterNet Group.
We’re community groups and residents from Noosa in the north to the Gold Coast in the south and Toowoomba in the west, and everyone in between.
Many of us united in 2006 to assist the residents of the Mary River valley and the lower reaches in the Hervey Bay area, to oppose the Government’s proposal to build a $1,500 million dam on the Mary River and pump water over 100km to the northern suburbs of Brisbane.
We worked long and hard to win the campaign to save the Mary River, its unique and endangered wildlife, our precious rural and riparian environment, and the local communities that were threatened by the Beattie and Bligh Governments’ ruthless plans to build the dam.
The success of that campaign was due primarily to the unity, vision and determination of all local water and environmental campaigners and groups, who recognised that new strategies to provide and ensure sustainable water supplies for the SE Queensland region – other than building more dams – needed to be established as soon as possible.
So we have united to continue to support local communities who are campaigning to spread the message to the two million + urban residents of this region. We also want to promote the message that water is a basic need, and a limited and scarce resource, and innovative and sustainable programs and policies must be adopted and implemented by Governments at all levels.
Here we place information on all of our network activities, describe the ways that you can help to achieve our objectives, and indicate how you can join us in this effort.
